It Sucks to be Me!
Just caught Avenue Q – The Musical! WOOT! It is indeed an experience to rmbr!

Coincidentally, Ning and J C were catching Avenue Q too – on the very same day and time, so we had lunch together before the show and discussed the musical after over drinks. *grin* (How uncanny can it get? We booked our tickets separately with no prior knowledge of each other going, butstill end up going at the same time and day, out of 18 shows we could have gone to, separately!)
Anyway, the musical was awesome and especially for someone who has actually tried working with puppets before – it is a THRILL to see how the puppets can be made to be so alive. (They even have TWO persons manipulating one puppet at the same time! The coordination! OMG) There is of course a huge difference in ventriloquism and puppet theatre, but it is an example of how puppets can be brought to such a big stage in such a manner. TOTALLY AWESOME.
I don’t know about Ning and J C, but part of why i decided to bust my wallet for this besides the accolades that i have heard about it, was also that it involved puppets. We always talk about striving to improve ourselves, and i felt that part of the process involves watching the best and learning from them. Besides, there were also other things like lighting and audio that could be learnt too.
Besides seeing the puppets, it was a thrill to see how the whole show was so perfect – in term of music, lighting cues, switching in and out… Having worked on Ultimate Magic set with light and audio i know how crazy it is – but wow! They were so perfect in the cue timings! I can only imagine the rehearsals! The talents were fantastic as well! The singing, and changing of voices! Storyline was tightly plotted, and there were definitely high points in the show which had everyone gasping in laughter and of course crazy rounds of applause. (No doubt not for the underaged! And it seemed to be the segment which everyone enjoyed the most! Hahaha!!)
There were some parts of the show which referenced to American Culture which was quite out of our time (read: older than we are) so i was quite lost there (J C was only one amongst us three to know what was going on… LOL!) Also, one of the characters at times had an accent quite strong, which made her hard to understand, but it was however, not anything big enough to dent the whole experience. The numbers are so catchy and fun, they are still ringing in my head! LOL!
J C mentioned after the show that these sort of show can do two things – either really inspire you, or demoralise you! Cos it is just so good! Whahaha! Thank goodness i’m an optimist – always inspiring, not demoralising for me! =D
If you have the cash to spare, (well try to save!) do head down to catch the show! I think it is an awesome musical! WOOT!

“It sucks to be me!”
I don’t mean that literally – it’s a number from Avenue Q! Hahahaha!
Edit: Ning made an extremely interesting blog post – very amazing speech. Do read when you have the time, i find it very thought provoking and interesting. It is long, but definitely worth the time to read.
